Getting Involved

Join the JA-SIG community!

Anyone is welcome to join the JA-SIG uPortal community and get involved. The easiest way to get involved is to subscribe to the uPortal Implementors and Channel Developers mailing list as described below. While the mailing list works well for getting answers to your questions and discussing issues, you may wish to get further involved by self-registering on the JA-SIG issue tracking system to report issues and log feature requests. Once registered you may also create a profile in our JA-SIG Facebook.

Mailing Lists

Several mailing lists are available for discussions related to uPortal.

A listing of JA-SIG email lists for discussions specifically about uPortal is maintained in our wiki.

A comprehensive listing of all JA-SIG email lists, including those about uPortal, those about loosely related projects, and those about concerns spanning across JA-SIG projects, is also maintained in our wiki.

One way to get involved is to jump on the lists and ideally to help answer questions and further discussion there.

How to Contribute

Perhaps the easiest way to contribute is to download and install the code, join the implementors mailing list and share your experiences (good or bad) using the portal and share your ideas as to how it can be improved. You can also visit the JA-SIG wiki and contribute your ideas there.

At the next level, you can contribute code in the form of bug fix solutions, enhancements, uPortal channel or portlets. If you wish to contribute to the uPortal Framework itself, you should first subscribe to the uPortal Framework Developers mailing list as outlined above and discuss your contributions with the other developers.

The JA-SIG Clearinghouse is maintained by JA-SIG for sharing Java projects, documents, procedures, and tools. Once at the clearinghouse potential contributors can establish an account, review existing projects, and offer their own code for others to use.

Contributing Documentation

The uPortal project also needs contributions in the area of documentation. you can help. Our wiki is now the primary mechanism for documenting uPortal.

Becoming a JA-SIG Member

Finally, your institution or organization can play a valuable role by becoming a JA-SIG Member. The JA-SIG Membership page details the benefits of official membership, describes how this supports JA-SIG's projects like uPortal and explains how to become a member.
